If you opted for a durable cardboard scratcher, made of strong furniture cardboard, your furniture will not only last much longer, but you can often give it a second or even third life!
With the reversible models, you give the furniture a second life by turning it over once the top is worn out.
But... if you chose a model with an 'opening' or 'inner space' and your cat mainly used the interior space to hide, sleep and play, then the inside of the furniture is still fine to scratch. With a little DIY you can saw those models in half so that your cat can enjoy the (often even) 2 new scratchers that are created in this way! This is how you give the scratching furniture a 3rd life!

But this is also possible with other models, such as Tronc, Phredia, Brochhaus, Le Cube, Loop Block and even the Teevee.
Are the new 'half' pieces of furniture that you created less beautiful than a new one? This is possible because the sides often have signs of wear. Your cat won't be bothered by that, but don't worry if it does bother you. Position them in a less conspicuous place as extra scratching places! The only important thing is that they are along a walking path of your cat. Another option is to use them as an outdoor scratching post. Furniture cardboard lasts surprisingly long outside if they are placed on a covered terrace. And if there is water damage, then that is not so bad since the scraper is already in its second or third life.
